Call for Abstracts

The 2010 HIV Diagnostics Conference Planning Committee is soliciting abstracts for poster or oral presentation at the 2010 HIV Diagnostics Conference.

The conference, co-sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), provides an opportunity for clinicians, laboratorians, program managers, directors, and industry representatives to review developments in HIV diagnostics, share data and research findings, and establish collaborations.  It is also a forum for vetting the proposed HIV testing algorithms described in “HIV Testing Algorithms: A Status Report” (available at www.hivtestingconference.org).

The conference will be held March 24-26, 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel Universal Orlando in Orlando, Florida.  Online registration will open October 19, 2009 for a fee of $350.  Proceedings from past conferences, registration, and abstract submission can be accessed online at www.hivtestingconference.org.

Abstract Categories

Abstracts should present research findings addressing one of the following eight topics:

    1. Point-of-Care/Contact (POC) Testing – Performance of single or multiple rapid test algorithms
    2. Serologic Laboratory Testing – EIA, CIA, rapid tests, Western Blot, and IFA
    3. Nucleic Acid & Antigen Laboratory Testing – RNA, DNA or antigen tests for acute infection and in algorithms in conjunction with serologic tests
    4. Strategies for Recency Testing – Assays to identify new (recent) infections post-seroconversion
    5. Innovative Testing Technologies & Methods in Research & Development – Developments and technologies not yet approved by the FDA.
    6. Tests for Clinical Management & Case Surveillance – Tropism, resistance, genotyping and viral load
    7. Other Challenges in HIV Diagnostics – Including confirmation of HIV-2 and acute HIV infection, testing of non-blood-based specimens, vaccine-induced seroreactivity
    8. Bridging POC & Laboratory Testing – Model practices in quality assurance

Data needed to validate the proposed HIV testing algorithms, described in “HIV Testing Algorithms: A Status Report” and summarized in “Key Data Needs”, (available at www.hivtestingconference.org), will be given priority for consideration.

Abstracts will be selected for poster or oral presentation. Posters will be displayed for two days. Presentations, in a plenary lecture format for all conference participants, will be grouped into sessions based on subject matter, with question and answer periods following each session.

Abstract Submission

Detailed instructions and on-line abstract submission are available here.  Please contact Kenneth Landgraf (APHL) with any questions regarding abstract submission. Abstracts should be received by November 9, 2009. Late-breaking submissions reporting findings not available before the November 1st deadline will be accepted from December 15, 2009 to January 15, 2010.

Abstracts should not exceed 4000 characters (including spaces). Submissions over 2000 characters will need to be submitted in two parts. All abstracts should adhere to the following format:

Scientific Research
The following format is appropriate for abstracts on the performance of HIV assays and
algorithms:

    1. Objective: Study objectives, hypothesis tested, or description of the problem.
    2. Methods: Methods for testing and analysis, selection and origin of specimens evaluated, and standard used for comparison.
    3. Results: Specific results with appropriate statistical analysis.
    4. Conclusions: Conclusions and implications.

Descriptive Summary
The following format is appropriate for abstracts on the application of HIV test algorithms in
settings of likely use.

    1. Project: Description of the project.
    2. Issue: Specific project problems or needs addressed by the abstract.
    3. Results: Qualitative or quantitative summary of implementation facilitators and barriers.
    4. Lessons Learned: Summary of lessons learned and implications.

Abstract Review & Notification

Each abstract will be reviewed and scored based on the following criteria:

Primary authors will receive notice on the disposition of their abstract by December 15, 2009 (February 1, 2010 for late-breaker abstracts).

Please share this call for abstracts with colleagues and partners who would be interested in attending and/or submitting an abstract for this conference.
